Something Old, Something New and Something very eerie.

BMM 16 July 2026 President David opened the meeting at 7.35 and welcomed 17 members including would-be film maker guest, Prince.

President’s report – David announced that the club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at the next scheduled club meeting on Thursday 6 August. Official notification will be sent to members in the coming week. Only financial members of the club are eligible to stand for office and vote in the election for office bearers.

Film Bite David introduced the concept known as “breaking the fourth wall”. It’s described as “the imaginary, invisible barrier that separates performers from their audience”, or more succiently “the device of (the actor/character) talking directly to the audience”. There are a number of videos on You Tube which explain the concept.

West End Film festival Freddie Lee Jones 111 showed a short film The Exchange which was accepted as an entry in the recent West End film festival. Freddie wrote the script on a flight from the US to Australia, then filmed, acted and post produced it. The concept was “in the park, after dark, a deal is made”, but it has a very cute twist. Freddie also showed a trailer for a feature length “horror” movie called The Chair which he has been working on it for six or seven years. He said he’s doing some “fine tuning” and hopefully it will be completed in a about a month or two.

Neal gave us a “Blast from the past”, a video he and Val shot 25 years ago titled “A place I never been”. That place was Lake Mungo in south-western New South Wales. Now a World Heritage listed National Park, Neal obtained special permission to go there when it had only just been discovered. He said it was described it as “the oldest known settlement on earth”, with evidence of human habitation 60-thousand years ago, covered and preserved by thousands of years of sand deposits. Neal shot the video on his Sony Hi-8 camera. It was a fascinating story, extremely well presented.

Quiet Achievers Glenn announced that the has booked the 100-seat New Farm Cinema at New Farm to show his collaborate film Quiet Achievers on 20 August starting at 6.30pm. The project consisted of seven films by five directors. Glenn said he was very proud of the collaboration by club members in producing and shooting seven films. “This is what we do at BMM”. Olympic National Park  Paul showed a video he shot in the United States last year on Olympic National Park which is regarded as the most environmentally diverse national park. It incorporates wild Pacific Ocean coastline, snow covered mountains up to 8,000 above sea level, glaciers receeding with climate change, and four temperate rainforests. Deep in the Hoh rainforest, famous for the eerie Hall of Mosses, is a spot regarded as the ‘quietest place in the United States”.

Conversations at a bus stop. Peter W gave us a preview of his latest creation called “Bus Stop Conversation”, a quirky little film about two strangers at a bus stop having a conversation – well, one was having a conversation, the other was trying very hard to not have the conversation . It’s part of a series which is still in production.

Up the Creek.  Peter also showed a film shot in a beautiful creek in suburban Wishart. Called “Up the Creek”, the video was primarily to test out his new lenses but it was beautiful example of nature videography.

Green Room Peter also talked about upcoming projects that members can take part in.

The first is Saturday 18 July at the Port of Brisbane which is having an open day. Peter has arranged for a small group to film across locations including Observation Dec with a panoramic view of the entire port, Patricks container terminals and operations, and the Tug Boat Base, an action, movmenet and maritime character.

On Saturday 1 August, Peter is hosting another of his Green Room filming activities “Creative Cinematography 101” where you can "learn 10 creative shots that every filmmaker should know".

On Saturday , 15 Aughust, Peter will host an “Impromptu Discussion – 3-camera shoot this will be a three-camera shoot which will be perfect for practicing coverage, reactions and multi-angle storytelling, and an opportunity for actors to practice their craft.

Peter also showed a fun video he shot on the spur of the moment at the Redlands Coastal Museum a treasure trove historical “stories that shaped Redlands” You can visit the museum at 60 Smith Street, Cleveland from 10am-3.30 daily.

Tech Talk And to wrap up the evening, Nigel gave us an informative tech talk on multi camera editing. He demonstrated a shoot on a stage production utilising three camera. He showed how to select tracks, synchronise audio, switch camera angles to create a professional quality video. Most editing software packages have a mult-camera editing facility. It looks intimidating, but with just a bit of practice it’s an amazing resource to have.

The program was so packed that we ran over-time but it was well worth well.

Our next meeting will be 6 August commencing at 7.30pm. This will commence with the club’s Annual General Meeting, reports on our achievements over the past year, and the election of office bearers to take us through the next 12 months.
