The meeting started at 7.30ish and, with a few late arrivals, we had more than 20 members and guests.
UGG competition - President David reminded members that the next UGG competition is scheduled to be shown at our meeting on Thursday 2nd July 2. The suggested topics are
Brisbane historical spots,
one-minute UNICA style movie and/or a
one-take film in the style of the Netflix documentary series “Adolescence”.
David mentioned that he has a studio available which is not being used at the moment, so if you have any ideas for utilising it contact David.
From the committee meeting earlier in the evening…
Public Liability Insurance is available to all members through our affiliaition with Photographic Society of Queensland, as well as Volunteer Workers insurance which covers any cast and crew on their way to,
during or on their way home from a club shoot.
Membership fees – and a reminder that club membership fees for 2026/27 are due by the end of June. Membership fees are payable online or cash (but preferably on-line).
Website update: the club’s website has been updated to reflect the current membership fees ($80 individual and family members, and $40 for students and country members) and the fact that club members no longer have to pay ‘meeting attendance’ fees.
“Man Baby” – David showed another example of Artificial Intelligence being used for good, evil or just for fun with a short YouTube movie Man Baby by Mr Newberger who describes it as following “a familiar little boy who never quite learned that the world doesn't revolve around him”. It’s variously described as parody, political satire and musical comedy. No prizes for guessing who is being ‘parodied’. It’s had around 370,000 views in a week.
Movies to see: 1- Human Forever – a feature film exploring how dementia is dealt with in 11 different countries. Australia does not come out well in; The Story of Film which shows how filmmakers are influenced by the historical events of their times, and by each other.
CameraPro is hosting an event with Sony Roadshow described as “an opportunity to learn new techniques, hear from experienced presents and get hands-on with the latest Sony cameras and lenses”. Tickets $25-$39. It’s happening in Brisbane on Friday 3 July 1-6pm at Super Ordinary, Hamilton.
Quiet Achievers Glenn said the movie was finished. He will be showing it to the movie directors and committee members to critique with a view to improving it. He is planning to show it in a cinema as soon as that can be arranged.
Gareth Macready, a visiting author who has published a anthology of short stories called The Bones of the Universe, which is available at Avid Reader, West End. It’s about another universe but features characters mainly from Japan, which stems from Gareth’s 23 years living in Japan. He has turned seven of the 16 stories into film screenplays and is hoping to turned them into films ranging from 8 minutes to full length feature films. Gareth is hoping that BMM might be able to assit with his ambition.
Upcoming events - Green Room activities

Bush Track Horror a film made two weeks ago by Peter W, shot by Glenn, with drone footage by Murray. The movie is still being ‘polished’ and there will be a full colour version and monochrome version.
A special guest for the evening was Redd Robertson who runs a media company called 22 Media which makes videos for businesses and social media content. He showed a Testimonial video that he made with Peter W for the company which constructed the Green Room.
In addition to the Testimonial video, Redd also showed a video he was recently commissioned to produce, shoot and edit on the opening of a new muiltipurpose room at Woodridge State High School “for our young people to become empowered, resilient and world chaging, learners for life who make safe, respectful and responsible decisions and go on to lead happy, successful lives and contgribute to the community ”.
One Minute Movie: Bala talked about his UNICA one-minute movie called The Mask, which involved about 20 people. He described it as a movie which show people who show hatred, being misogyenist, racist who think they have all the freedom and that they are running social media and can talk about nything, but how hypocritical they are in their public space and privae space. Hopefully we will see it at our next meeting on 2nd July, and talk about making a short movie in a public space.
Race Around the World. Paul talked about a new doucmentary series on ABC TV. Race Around the World revives a concept first shown 25 years ago when six young filmmakers were given the task of being sent anywhere in the world to make a series of 4-5 minute movies in ten days. Their task is not only battling jet lag, but landing in a place chosen for them to find, shoot and edit their film every ten days. The ABC provides logistical support to get to each location but the filmmaker faces the daunting prospects of working under pressure, language and cultural constraints to find and produce a good story. On Sunday nights they face a panel of judges which includes people such industry legends as film critic Margaret Pomerance and director Bruce Beresford who give honest, (sometimes brutaly honest) critiques of their efforts. The series is on ABC TV Sunday Nights at 7.30pm and iView. Bala mentioned that he had applied for one of the six spots. He said the application process was very intensive but very interesting. He said the successful applicants were very experienced filmmakers but it was a great learning experience.
Aerial Australia. Paul also mentioned a series on SBS TV (not ABC TV, as mistakenly mention) called Aerial Australia which was made in 2024. It’s on SBS On Demand and randomly on free-to-air. Paul described it as beautifully shot and a masterclass for any drone camera operators.
“Mom, I Can’t” – Freddie showed a movie he shot on 30 May about a teenager finding out his mother is involved in the adult film industry. This was the first draft but Freddie said he was going to re-visit it and make some changes. It was inspired by a true story of two mothers who live in Columbia whose sons direct their Only Fans content. He said that was one side of the spectrum. He wanted to show another aspect of that genre and the impact it can have on family, without sounding ‘preachy’.
To wrap up the evening, Glenn gave a great presentation on the use of Da Vinci Resolve editing software which is available both as a free download or the ‘studio version for A$469. Glenn said that Premier Pro was regarded as the top of the line editing program but some professional editors prefer resolve as their first choice. It can be complex but it can also be simple as well. He said the free version has most of the features you need. A number of our members use it and love it. Glenn said it’s about finding out what works for you and what you want to get out of editing. Glenn demonstrated the ease and simplicity of editing and colour grading with Da Vinci Resolve, but also stressed that it can be very complex as well. The Club’s laptop has Da Vinci Resolve loaded on it which members can borrow to experiment with it (as long as you bring the laptop back for the next meeting!!!).
That wrapped up another diverse and fascinating movie makers meeting.
Our next meeting is Thursday 2nd July at 7.30pm. Keep across the BMM website for details in the "upcoming meetings" tab on the front page.
