It’s not all about video making – there’s cake as well.

BMM Club meeting 21 May 2026

President David opened the meeting at 7.35pm and welcomed 17 members and guests.

Apologies were received from Ry, Nigel, Peter, Joel, Lachlan, Adam.

Let them eat cake. Before the meeting got underway, Noel had a special announcement – a budding Master Chef, he entered his delicious cakes in the Brookfield Show and came away with one First place, six Second placings and a third. And the proof was in the pudding (or cake) when he brought along some of his delicious entries for us to enjoy. See what you miss out on if you aren’t at the club meeting.

Camera cage/rig update. Glenn gave us an update on the camera cages/rigs that he spoke about at the previous meeting. The club has ordered a cage for our club camera. It’s on its way and will no doubt be a valuable addition to the club’s hardware which is available to all members.

Film bites David has been trawling the internet for interesting films, especially music videos which he said were a great source of creative inspiration. So much effort goes into those few minutes. Among the ones he featured were

The Green Room Peter W couldn’t be at the meeting but he is still being very active, especially in the Green Room. His latest projects are:

Saturday 23 May, Outside interview with singer/musician Lauren Karen

Sunday 24 May Sally will be filming the final scene of her feature film, a World War 2 romance story, and club members are invited to observe the green screen shoot.

Saturday 30 May, filming Bush Track Horror. Peter still needs an assistant director, Osmo Pocket cineperson, behind the scenes camera operator and drone operator.

Details of where and when the shoots are happening are on the club’s website – scroll down to the “Upcoming Events”.

UNICA Film Festival Damian has been extending his contacts around the world and found the UNICA Movie Festival in Lugano, Switzerland from 30 August to 4 September. UNICA is an independent international organisation, a member of the CICT International Council for Film, Television and Audiovisual Communication at UNESCO. Each of the 25 member nations is invited to present a selection of films. Although Australia is no longer a member since FAMM folded, any country may enter a movie of up to one minute. This has inspired the club to invite all members to have a go. It will also be the basis for an UGG competition (see below).

For more information on UNICA Film Festival go to https://unica.movie/ and https://unica-web.one/

Chill Dome David showed the latest version of Chill Dome, a video about two naughty pupils being sent to the Chill Dome to ‘chill out’. David and Kohsuke are creating the video in conjunction with Robbie Lusher, founder and owner of The Dome Company with the intention of giving it to schools throughtout Queensland. David said it has been quite a challenge to get the AI just right – it’s still not perfect, but they’re getting much closer.

Smoke and Mirrors   - Heather showed the latest iteration of her movie Australian Glimpses. It is a collection of real and AI generated clips from Australia’s past, present and future curated by Heather with editing by Kohsuk. It’s an incredibly diverse and seemingly unrelated series of clips from kangaroos, landmarks, politicians, sports people, soldiers singing Waltzing Matilda and scientific discoveries. They are all bound together by their relevance to what makes Australia. Heather handed out pages for feedback, but it would be hard to imagine it being anything but overwhelmingly positive.

Mortal Kombat 2. If you ask Freddie Lee how he feels about Mortal Kombat be prepared for his life story and a smile that would light up the universe. He was a fan since Mortal Komba 1 came out, and when he heard that the red carpet Australian Premiere of the movie was happening on the Gold Coast he did the impossible – he went from the euphoria of being able to get into the ‘fan zone’ to the seventh heaven of somehow wrangling his way into the fully 'sold out’ Premiere and meeting and mingling with the stars. If you want to see what true happiness looks like, check out Freddie Lee’s video of the event.

Quiet Achievers. Glenn showed a trailer for QA. He said he had hoped to get a screening by end of June but is waiting for one more film to be completed.

Silent Movie Murray was inspired to reprise a quirky video he shot a couple of years ago called “How to clean your bin”. It was a silent movie that he shot using two cameras of himelf literally showing the perils and pain of trying to clean you rubbish bin. Always thinking outside the square, Murray felt that this style could be good for a future UGG competition.

Adolescence – Michael M showed a clip from Adolescence, the dramatic Netflix three one-hour episodes series, each shot in an uninterrupted one-camera take. Michael thought this could be a great challenge for club members.

So, after some discussion the meeting landed on three themes for our next UGG competition:

  1. a one minute movie on any subject for the UNICA film festival in Switzerland;

  2. a single-shot film, as in the Netflix series Adolescence

  3. a local historical theme such as the Witton Barracks or the Eldorado cinema beginnings based on found gold from the river in Indooroopilly.

The competition will be judged at our meeting on July 2 – so, you have six weeks to get thinking, shooting and editing.

David wrapped up the meeting at 9.30pm - looking forward to our next challenges.

Our next club meeting will be on Thursday 4 June.
