First Planning Night
Last Thursday night's meeting was a quiet, but valuable one. We began the evening with voting on Gareth Macready becoming our new president. Fortunately, Gareth was unanimously voted in. Go Gareth! Unfortunately, Gareth couldn't attend that night due to prior commitments. Well done Gareth! We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting as our President Elect.
Nigel shared how he works with an 8 camera shoot. Both discussing practical aspects of the shoot itself, along with editing tips. Thanks Nigel- a valuable excercise.
The rest of the meeting we formed into 3 small groups and brainstormed ideas for projects that would move our club forward. Here are the suggestions, which we would like you to consider:
Short Film ideas:
A teenager leaving school trying to figure out the next steps in life.
A scriptwriter trying to sell his script.
A wake (could be shot over a long weekend).
Cinema length Projects:
'Race Around SEQ' (would need a name change). In the style of the SBS series where film makers find something worthy of a short film and shoot it. Concepts could include: places; organisations; history; events; people; community. It is a very open concept.
'Claim to Fame'. A documentary. Choose a location, find a character, historical figure, organisation etc that gives that town a 'Claim to Fame'. Eg. Oreilly and Oreilly's Guest House.
'Twista'. A collection of short films. Can be any genre (eg: Horror, drama, sci-fi etc) as long as they are fictional and contain a twist.
Comedy Series:
A series of shorts (episodes) with 3 or 4 characters with various short comings that causes all kinds of dramas. eg: blind person; stutterer; deaf person; mute person.
'The Date from Hell'. A series of short dramas of different dating stories that turned to crap. Should either contain comedic or horror elements.
Ideas to engage external film makers:
Every 1st Thursday will be a collaborative and planning night where we get together and actually plan anything and everything to do with a film(s). External movie makers will be invited to share in these meetings and to bring other collaborators with them. Why? It is a quiet place where they can meet and plan and also have access to BMM members and benefits.
Identify film festivals now that we want to target our movies at. This is so we can identify time frames and other expectations.
Open up our chosen 'cinema length' project to external movie makers. Criteria would need to be set of course; and it could be run as a competition. Directors would need to be a member of BMM. Would need to be promoted well in advance of screening.
Personally, I think that we need to select one of the Cinema length production ideas as our main project for the year. Doing a short film(s) as a side project is also achievable. What we could do is use our planning nights to have different teams working on different projects.
Our next meeting is the first Thursday of October. As such, it will be a collaboration and planning meeting. We will use this blog as our starting point and narrow it down to the main projects that we want to work on. If you are receiving this email and you did not attend last Thursday, by all means bring your ideas to the next meeting. We really want to hear them.
By the end of this meeting, I am hoping that we will have a clear direction on our next projects and the future direction of the club.
