Hello there

Paul is still away in the USA, hopefully steering clear of the community disturbances in LA. He literally has the keys to the blog account so we can't update it, so here's the email version

We had 13 present including Glenn's guest, Gareth.

Glenn gave an update where he had joined a crew to practice for a 48 hour film, where he was the soundie with his boom mic and radio mic (Go II Pro). They were impressed as they were going to use iPhone sound! It was mostly an indoor practice shoot due to the inclement weather.

Murray on sound

Murray then gave an update on his project with Sally Elliot, 'Because of the War', set in the 1940’s, which was an outdoor shoot at Beerwah. Murray was a backup sound guy as Sally’s regular was not available and Murray used a boom pole into an HN5 recorder. The sound captured the magpies and horses chewing grass! It was a multi-location shoot. From what Murray can gather, Sally was VERY pleased with the sound quality. Murray then went into demo mode and brought out his boom pole, shock mounted Rode, blimp and dead cat and his backup H5 zoom mic. Key takeaways:

  • Good sound is just as important as video!

  • Good quality audio gear generally results in good quality sound

  • Murray recorded 2 channel sound

  • Wear quality headphones to pick up extraneous sounds and always monitor your audio on a shoot. Listen for those crows cawing in the background

  • Uses any rehearsal time to work out your best position and mic placement. As a boom operator, you don't want to be in the shot or have a shadow in shot

  • Use a blimp and a dead cat to overcome wind noise

  • Point your mic at the talent and monitor it on the head phones, noting that some mics can be super directional so any drifting in placement could result in poor audio

  • Have at least 2 sound devices recording

Quiet Achievers of Brisbane - Glenn

Glenn outlined his vision for the Quiet Achievers of Brisbane: Over time, an awareness has grown that there are many quiet achievers out there. Those who are doing amazing, ground-breaking things but may not have ever been recognised for it. What if we made a feature length movie, based on a dozen or so short stories about individuals such as these from various walks of life- art, science, technology, environment, charity, volunteering, health, the aged, literary, etc?

The goal of each short story would be to present each individual (or group) as a self-narrated story, but including many cutaways of cinematic and relevant imagery that adds value to the story. The primary goal is positive, uplifting and informative entertainment. Two productions already in pre-production are on Ross (Music Gig Productions) and Peter (Indie Film Maker). We will discuss more on Thursday 19 June 2025.
